The best swimming vacations for triathletes
There is something idyllic about immersing yourself in open water. When you arrive either on an island or lake shore under your own steam and look back from where you have swum, you can appreciate where you have arrived in a way that no one else possibly can.
Nominated Best Activity/Sports Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards for 4 consecutive years, SwimTrek already run several coaching camps tailored towards helping swimmers train for long distance swim events, SwimTrek is taking its expertise in running guided swim training trips and opening this up to the triathlon world. Unique to other triathlon camps, SwimTrek’s Open Water Swimming for Triathlon trip is specifically focused on improving athletes swimming ability, often reported as the discipline triathletes struggle with the most.
Based in Tenerife, Spain, guests on this camp will enjoy a unique training environment – a swimming focused triathlon coaching camp specifically centred around swimming technique and practice, but with the goal of making this part of a wider triathlon training plan. The mild climate throughout the year and the landscapes of Tenerife are a major draw card.
With a Swim Smooth certified coach who also comes with the experience of competing in triathlons themselves, guests can join in the confidence that their trip leaders have the knowledge to prepare them to take on their next triathlon goal. SwimTrek coaches will guide guests through the various aspects of open water swimming, from drafting and sighting to arm recovery and stroke technique.
Guests will also benefit from excellent facilities and the perfect environment to help improve your triathlon performance. There will be sessions at the state of the art facilities at Tenerife Top Training, where guests can make use of the 50m open air swimming pool, indoor and outdoor gym and high tech swimming flume with the option to film your stroke. Swimmers will also enjoy sea swims, offering up the chance to get out in the open water and put your newfound skills into practice. Guests will be able to complete circuit training with time to work on specific triathlon skills such as manoeuvring buoys as well as taking longer swims along the coast to help build endurance and confidence in the water.
Fiona Ford, SwimTrek’s specialist triathlon coach and former Kona Ironman podium finisher, said this about the launch of the trip: “After 18 years competing in races from Standard and ITU triathlon to Ironman distance events, including racing as a professional, I understand how essential it is for any triathlete to develop the full range of skills necessary to feel confident in open water. I am very excited to bring together a focus on swimming for a specialist triathlon-coaching week with SwimTrek. With triathlons and open water swimming continuing to gain in popularity, the timing of the SwimTrek training weeks (in November and May) extend the season and provide fast tracking of basic skills and progressing into advanced skills for versatility and sustainable speed. Tenerife offers the perfect environment for swimmers who are serious about taking their triathlon swimming to the next level, with stunning sea swimming to apply the full range of skills. I’m thrilled to be leading the next wave of triathletes into open water and helping them deliver a fast, effective swim at their next triathlon event.”
SwimTrek is running its first ever triathlon coaching camps in Tenerife in November 2019. Prices begin from £1,090 per person based on a shared room. Packages includes a swimming tour led by professional tri-swim coaches and full safety cover, 5 nights’ accommodation and all breakfasts and lunches. Flights and evening meals not included.
